The follow-up, 2014’s, tightened up the songcraft, amped up their attack, and spit-shined the production, suggesting aspirations to follow fellow Chi-town miscreants down the path of major-label patronage and late-night talk-show appearances. But with Down in Heaven, Twin Peaks have already initiated the rural retreat that most rock bands take only after succumbing to excess, holing themselves up in a friend’s northern Massachusetts studio-house and turning it into a veritable retirement home for early twenty-somethings. The result is a casual, charmingly low-key set of kitchen-table blues, slow-dance serenades, and unplugged power pop. Here, Twin Peaks aren’t so interested in being the life of party as documenting what happens outside of it: the awkward first kisses, the difficult break-up conversations, the sad walks home alone.It’s a really good look for them. By toning down their sound, Twin Peaks are better able to amplify the sweet/sour tension between honey-voiced vocalists Cadien Lake James and Jack Dolan, and their more acid-tongued compatriot, Clay Frankel. But even as down ‘n’ out diatribes like “Cold Lips” wallow in cruel sentiment (to wit: “you ought to get yourself a shiny gold medal for being the coldest bitch I know”), Down in Heaven exudes a welcoming, wood-panelled warmth.

I can't believe I just got a few days ago. Saying this is an amazing compilation is an understatement.

Sooooooooo much material here covering both the TV series and film. Everything from familiar cool jazz, and percussion shuffles the series is known for, to the deep brooding synthesizer moods and ambiences of the film score. Listening to it reminds me of again why the show impacted pop culture the way it did. Coincidentally, Death Waltz finally reissued its long awaited vinyl release of the original Twin Peaks soundtrack just days ago, and the liner notes have Mr. Badalamenti remarking Twin Peaks as being his defining work, this compilation showing just how great he is at sculpting these surreal atmospheres.Interesting, Lynch has a photo embedded in each track which greatly supplements the audio, I definitely enjoy the visual food for thought.

Two small complaints, being the electronic guy, I naturally prefer more of the synthy stuff over the jazz, but that's an obvious non-existent problem. The other real one is that I would have liked the audio track to have been tagged with track numbers if not organized in some way.This originally sold for $40, it's now available for $10 at the time of this review. If you're a fan, what are you waiting for? This in my opinion, is a much better release then the other soundtracks (ouch, controversial!) This compilation deserves a 9 disc, or 500 LP or whatever physical medium, the material here deserves it. This will keep you excited for the upcoming third season.
