The Prince of Asturias Foundation Choir travelled to Portugal to perform at the closing concert of the “Dias da Música em Belém” Festival

The Prince of Asturias Foundation Choir travelled to Portugal to take part in the closing concert of the “Dias da Música em Belém” Festival, organised by the Belém Cultural Centre Foundation. The concert was held on Sunday, 29^th April, at 1pm at the Belém Cultural Centre.

The Choir, together with the Children’s Choir of the Santa Cecilia Music Academy in Lisbon, sang the piece Carmina Burana by Carl Orff alongside the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor, Maestro Cesario Costa. Ana Maria Pinto (soprano), João Rodrigues (tenor) and João Merino (baritone) performed as soloists.

Under the title “The Human Voice and Singing through the Ages”, the Festival brought together soloists and choirs that offered a sample of the best works written for the voice. A review of different musical forms ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day, from the Renaissance madrigal to the Baroque, from the major symphony choirs of Romanticism to the intimacy of the Lied, as well as popular genres such as Blues and Fados.

The Festival, which was held between 27^th and 29^th April, included 60 concerts. Apart from the Foundation Choir, the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra, the French group The Swingle Singers, the Schostakovich Ensemble and the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra also took part, among other outstanding ensembles. The opening concert was given by the English group specialising in Baroque music The King’s Consort, who performed a concert version of Purcell’s opera Dido and Eneas.

This is the second time that the Choir has been invited by the Belém Cultural Centre to take part in this Festival. The first occasion was in 2010 in the “As paixões da alma” concert series. The Choir then gave two polyphonic concerts, as well as performing at the Palacio de Palhava, the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Lisbon.
